Fox 40 was roaming the Capitol Halls yesterday trying to do a story about Legislative employees blowing off work to watch basketball amidst all the March Madness. I didn't even fill out a bracket this year, and wasn't watching games at work, but I guess they still got their soundbite... :)

Top 10 Must-Follow Twitter Feeds for the California Budget Insider
The California state budget crisis of 2009 has played out in melo-drama form in recent months, unfolding line-by-line before the eyes of Sacramento insiders for the first time this year on Twitter. Sacramento is typically just a little behind Washington when it comes to political trends, and Twitter took the town by storm during the budget debate the same way it did to the national political press corps during the Obama campaign. Starting last February - during the first budget go-round - reporters, politicians, lobbyists, and the Sacramento community started realizing that if you weren't subscribing to the micro-blogging site for the latest in budget gossip and news - you were probably missing something. As the budget drama presumably comes to an end today, I have drafted a special "Furlough Friday" list of the top ten #cabudget #followfriday tweeting reporters, politicos and players that are a must follow for any Sacramento insider:
While I'm sure this list is missing some big players and other influencial Twitter feeds, it's my best attempt as a press flack and Sacramento social media follower to come up with a Top 10 list. I'd love to hear any thoughts, criticisms, or alternatives. Please do Tweet me your #followfriday suggestions as well, with anyone I may have missed, to @seth_unger. And feel free to Re-Tweet or share this column:

"Blank" YouTube Video on Social Networking
I have heard social networking compared to Multi-Level Marketing, and do truly believe that it can be used that way. This YouTube video is a clever way to discuss how to use social media tools to promote a brand, get input from your network of "friends," etc. I'm a believer in the potential of this technology already, but I think this is a good video take on the importance of utilizing these new tools for whoever, or whatever it is that you might be trying to sell. - Seth

This video demonstrates the importance of forming a connection with consumers to create brand advocates instead of simply encouraging people to buy a product.

icro-blogging platform Twitter has been the fastest growing online brand in May 2009, with an impressive 1,448 percent increase in unique visitors year-over-year, but the rapid growth is beginning to show sings of slowing, confirming earlier reports, with only a seven-percent increase in unique visitors from the previous month. The new data from Nielsen shows Twitter's audience growing from 1.2 million uniques in May 2008 to 18.2 million this year.
The average time spent by an Internet user on Twitter also saw a spectacular rise since last year, growing from six minutes and 19 seconds in May 2008 to 17 minutes and 21 seconds in the same month this year. However, month-over-month users spent less time on Twitter, decreasing one percent since April. Most likely, these numbers don't take into account third-party Twitter clients, which are becoming increasingly popular.
The largest social networking site in the world, Facebook, continued its seven-month rule as the number-one online destination among social networks, with 144.3 million unique visitors. US visitors are also on the rise, growing from 71.287 million in April to 75.444 million in May, with a year-over-year growth of 190 percent from 26 million last year.
MySpace may not be getting a lot of good statistics or news lately, with visitors and user numbers slightly down in the last months and massive layoffs in the US and foreign offices, but there is at least one positive bit of data, as it still is the highest-rated social network when it comes to videos streamed and has, in fact, seen a 22.9-percent rise in unique viewers of its video content from the previous month's 9.9 million to 12.2 million in May.

Seth Foster Unger: Blogger Launch
I am launching a blog to provide a compilation of commentary and relevant clips from traditional media, and insights on social media developments and solutions. I intend to include clips on state government, particularly at the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, as well as on pertinent issues on the national scene. You can't always fit everything you might want to say into a 140 character "Tweet," and I think that the functionality of Blogger offers a lot of tools. I also am a big fan of the ability to archive a story that might deserve to be revisited again later. Hopefully you will enjoy!
